Expert Review:

Even though a late comer to the ultra portable computers world, Acer laptops have received many awards for innovative design and are now among the top 5 brands. The Acer Ferrari 1100 is stylishly built and has many features at a competitive price with AMD Turion 64×2 TL-66 Processor 2.3GHz CPU, and 4 GB DDR2 RAM.

This lightweight laptop weighs 4.3 lbs and is 1.33 in thick which makes it compact but slightly heavy when compared to other ultra portable laptops. The overall dimensions are 11.96 in wide, 8.98 in deep and 1.33 in thick. It has solid build with black carbon finish, and can withstand hard knocks of frequent travel.

The wide screen display measures 12.1in diagonally and is WXGA TFT active matrix with a native resolution of 1,280 x 800 pixels. But the display has glossy finish that can cause reflections. It has many useful features like fingerprint reader located below the keyboard, 1.3 Mp camera and a microphone suitable for web conferencing. The keyboard is both ergonomic and compact. The touch pad is compact with a textured surface. The graphics processing is handled by Ati Radeon X1250 Graphics Card.

This subnotebook provides multiple connectivity with wireless networking card, optional Bluetooth, fast infra red, 56k modem, 3 USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and a firewire connection. Thus the laptop can be linked to a wide variety of peripherals and other devices apart from internet. The Dolby surround sound though clear appears a little feeble. The inbuilt DVD burner is huge plus for an ultra portable laptop.

The Li-Ion battery lasts nearly 4 hours under normal working conditions. The subnotebook carries typical 1 year warranty with telephonic/online technical support. The Acer Ferrari runs under Windows Vista Ultimate OS but the multitasking function appears a little slow. This may be due to the AMD Turion processor when compared to Intel Core Duo processor.

To summarize, the Acer Ferrari 1100 is a stylish lightweight laptop with a host of features, competitive pricing and rugged build though it lags a bit on performance.
