Expert Review:

The Advent 9212 laptop costing about £500 gives good value for money. It is lightweight weighing only 4 lbs and thin (1.2 in thickness). It is sleek, elegant and ideal for work or study.
The laptop is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5450 with a CPU cycle of 1.66 GHz. It has a memory of 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM which is good enough to load Windows Vista into the machine. The hard disk capacity is 160 GB which is quite large compared to its peers and can conveniently store many music files and images.
The screen size is 12″ wide measured diagonally and has active TFT matrix with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The graphics is handled by UMA graphics card which is a bit on the slower side for high performance gaming. This is one of the drawbacks of Advent 9212. With overall dimensions of just 11.6 x 8.9 x 1.2″ the laptop is very compact and portable.

For wireless internet and LAN connectivity, the laptop is provided with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi card. Thus it can be linked with other office computers with similar features or the internet without cables. For backup storage Advent 9212 has internal DVD +/- RW drive which is one of the plus points for a laptop of its size.
Regarding I/O ports, Advent 9212 has one Firewire connection which provides high speed data transfer link for digital video and other media. It is ideal for fast download of video images from a digital camcorder to the laptop. In addition, the laptop has 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting to external devices like modem, printer, scanner, digital camera etc. It also has provision for a 4 in 1 card reader that can read memory cards in multiple formats.
The above configuration includes Windows Vista Home Premium operating system and also Works 9 software. Overall, Advent 9212 laptop gives value for money, is highly portable and good for general work or study purpose but not for gaming.

“Extremely portable size, and performance very good for the price; poor sound, battery life average”

“Small, lightweight and portable, just what I wanted; speakers aren’t good – volume is too low – but with headphones or small external speakers it is fine”

“Performance is excellent; battery life, it doesn’t seem long before I am having to plug in the power, I will probably use it off the power all the time now”

Perfomance, good but batery life poopoo! However saying this size is perfect as I have had a stroke so can work keyboard with one hand comfortably. Also nice and lite making it easy to handle for me.

Size is perfect – small enough to be highly portable yet big enough to use as a ‘main’ computer. It is almost exactly the same size as A4 paper, giving an unexpected benefit of being able to slot in your rucksack among your ringbinders quite tidily. Performance is fine – it barely flinches under the strain of dozens of internet tabs, pdfs, word files and so on – it will only struggle under high end gaming. The screen is the same res as a 15″ laptop so there really is no compromise compared to a larger laptop. The keyboard is slightly smaller than usual but it is still easy to use.
Cons are terrible battery life – it usually lasts little over 60 mins, yet can take over 4 hours to charge! Fortunately the mains block is quite compact. The speakers are terrible, many netbooks have better speakers. The fan is very annoying – how can such a small laptop make such a racket??
Given the price, small flaws are acceptable nonetheless.

it’s a good wee laptop but it just switches off when it feels like it which is verey confusing!!! in the middle of drafting a letter or something along those lines, pc world took it had it a whole week and said there was nothing wrong with it! had it a year and thats the only problem im having with it.

It was brilliant for a year, but recently, it has started to shut down, when not using the mains plug, for no apparent reason. Although inconvenient, I was happy to use the mains power, until it started to turn off using that as well. I think it’s something to do with the fan, as it gets very hot and the fan is very loud. A temporary solution is to use a laptop stand, with a built in fan, which seems to have done the trick.
Besides this problem, it is a very good laptop, good size, good weight, good speed, good price, not so good sound, terrible battery life. Also some of the keys take getting used to, as they are smaller than a normal keyboard.
But to be honest, I don’t think a better laptop could be found for the same price. (I got mine for £340, about a year and a half ago, a lot cheaper than what it says on this website)
