Micro Star International (MSI) has introduced its latest ultra portable and cheap netbook Wind U100. Powered by Intel Atom N270 (1.6 GHz) processor, the model reviewed here had 1GB DDR2 RAM and a 160 GB hard drive. It is available in 3 vibrant colours: pink, white and black.

With dimensions of 10.2 x 7 x 1.3 inches and weighing only 2.5 lbs, the netbook compares favourably with other netbooks of its class. The 10 in widescreen TFT screen with LED backlit has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The display is quite bright with vibrant colours. The keyboard is spacious and comfortable to use.

MSI Wind U100 Netbook

The HD stereo speakers provide excellent sound quality. For external connectivity, there are Ethernet, 802.11g wireless, Bluetooth and 3 USB 2.0 ports. There is also 1.3 MP integrated webcam. PC world took us by surprise with the launch of their first net book, the 4211. Soon a revised version Advent 4213 was offered in the market in the small and inexpensive PC category. Advent 4213 was the first to come with mobile broadband connectivity as a standard feature. Available in two sleek colours of grey and silver, the basic specs of the machine are similar to any other in the market. The packaged 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor is perfectly designed to run in the small framework.

It is perfect for basic office purpose while on the move. The impressive storage capacity of 160 GB is sufficient for work, music, games and videos. The battery life of about 205 minutes is similar to other net books in the market and is just sufficient for daily commute or usage all around the house. The quality of the image is strong and the sharp resolution lets you work on two windows at once.

The only down side of this sleek technological piece is the bulkiness and that it takes more than a couple of seconds to start up. Another thing of concern is the heat building up on the underside. The glossy finish of the computer is not scratch proof and is prone to finger prints.

Priced at £350 or $450, Advent is one of the best available in the market at the given price range.

The Advent 4211 ultra portable laptop is light in weight weighing only 2.5lbs and thin (1.1in thickness) and affordable. It has a sleek and elegant design and looks similar to MSI Wind but at a lesser price.

The lightweight laptop is powered by Intel’s newest and smallest Atom Processor N270 with a CPU cycle of 1.6 GHz. It has a memory of 1 GB SDRAM which is good enough for Windows XP Home Edition OS. The hard disk capacity is 80 GB and the laptop is wireless enabled making it ideal for surfing the net. The ultra portable laptop does not have internal CD/DVD drive.

The display is 10″ wide measured diagonally and the LCD screen has a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. The display is bright for both indoor and outdoor light conditions and if necessary an external monitor can be connected through the VGA outlet. The graphics is handled by Intel GMA 950 graphics card which is not fast enough for high performance gaming. There is also an integrated webcam for taking snapshots.

For external connectivity, the Advent 4211 lightweight laptop is provided with wifi card, LAN and 3 USB ports in addition to microphone jacks. It has built in speakers and but they are tiny. The integrated SD card facilitates easy downloading of photos etc. from digital cameras. The 2in x 1.5in wide track pad is small but the keyboard which runs through the width of the chassis is comfortable to use.

The laptop is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5450 with a CPU cycle of 1.66 GHz. It has a memory of 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM which is good enough to load Windows Vista into the machine. The hard disk capacity is 160 GB which is quite large compared to its peers and can conveniently store many music files and images.

The screen size is 12″ wide measured diagonally and has active TFT matrix with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. The graphics is handled by UMA graphics card which is a bit on the slower side for high performance gaming. This is one of the drawbacks of Advent 9212. With overall dimensions of just 11.6 x 8.9 x 1.2″ the laptop is very compact and portable.

For wireless internet and LAN connectivity, the laptop is provided with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi card. Thus it can be linked with other office computers with similar features or the internet without cables. For backup storage Advent 9212 has internal DVD +/- RW drive which is one of the plus points for a laptop of its size.

Regarding I/O ports, Advent 9212 has one Firewire connection which provides high speed data transfer link for digital video and other media. It is ideal for fast download of video images from a digital camcorder to the laptop. In addition, the laptop has 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting to external devices like modem, printer, scanner, digital camera etc. It also has provision for a 4 in 1 card reader that can read memory cards in multiple formats.
