The ASUS Eee PC 1201T lightweight laptop is powered by AMD Athlon processor. It has 12.1” TFT widescreen 1366 x 768 pixels glossy display. The main memory is 2GB DDR2 RAM while the hard disk has 250 GB capacity.

Weighing 3.2 lbs and with a size of 11.65 x 8.3 x 1.1 in, the laptop is easy to carry. There is no built in optical drive in the laptop. Wi-fi and Ethernet connections take care of external connectivity. Other features of this lightweight laptop are stereo speakers, 1 headphone and 1 microphone jack, 1.3 MP Webcam, 3 USB ports, VGA out and one MMC/SDHC card slot.

Asus has given a new designer crocodile skin like texture to the EEPC 1008 Windows 7 Netbook through leading industrial designer like Karim Rashid. Thin (just 1”) and lightweight (2.42 lbs), the laptop is powered by Intel Atom Processor N450 with1.66 GHz clock speed, 667 MHz FSB and 512 Kb L2 cache.

The 10.1” LED-backlit TFT Widescreen 1024 x 600 pixels resolution frameless screen has poor viewing angles. The 250 GB capacity hard disk is sufficient for normal storage and the main memory is only 1 GB RAM. For external connectivity, this small laptop is provided with Wi-fi, Bluetooth and the traditional Ethernet but only 2 USB ports which is not standard. In addition there are built in speakers, webcam, headphone jack and microphone. The 3 cell 31 WHr Li-polymer battery lasts about 2 hours under normal usage.

The ASUS has made maiden entry into the low cost ultra-portable laptop market with the introduction of UL Series laptops. There are 3 models to choose from in UL Series viz. UL30A-A1, UL30A-X3 and UL30A-X1 with varying size of hard disk and processor speed. The first one has been reviewed here.

The ASUS UL30A-A1 ultra-portable and cheap laptop has elegant look with brushed aluminium lid that eschews fingerprints. With external dimensions of 12.7″ x 9.2″ x 0.58-0.97″ and weighing just 3.7 lbs, the laptop is compact and lightweight. The processor used is the special Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processor from Intel viz. Intel Core 2 Duo ULV SU7300 1.3GHz. The main memory has a capacity of 4GB DDR3-800 RAM and hard disk, 500 GB.

One of the highlights of ASUS UL 30A is the ability of the user to switch between different power modes on the run. By pressing a button on the upper left corner, the OS moves from High Performance, Entertainment, Quiet Office and Battery Saver in sequential fashion.

On the whole ASUS UL 30A has many superior features including excellent graphics, power saving, and elegant design. It is certainly worth the money.

The battery is definitely an improvement over the previous model of Asus’ Eee PC. It actually can be used all day long now, without setbacks. The make is shiny yet durable enough. The screen is 10 inches in size and accounts for the clarity of images it provides. The keyboard is well mounted too. The touchpad is extremely sensitive and user friendly. Along with the 160 GB hard drive that is provided, an excess 10 GB of online storage helps in safe keeping important data, in case the net book fails to perform. The 802.11n Wi-Fi provides possibly the fastest wireless connection. Ethernet is also included.

This particular net book has features which makes it clear that it was designed keeping the business community in mind. The package that comes with the purchase of this net book, does not offer much except for the usual comprising the battery, power supply, AC cable and primary documents. The rocker left/right button right below the touch pad is extremely responsive and is a revelation compared to the otherwise stiff buttons on the Eee PC 1000 series. The major aspect which differentiates this model from its predecessors is its removable battery which comes of great advantage to the user.

T91 at the onset is very attractive and compact. It weighs just over 2 pounds and is 1 inch thick. So it is indeed very slim. The screen swivels to the left with a smooth movement and is very sturdy to hold. The movement of the screen to form a tablet is smooth and stable.

The keyboard is small compared to other netbooks owing to its size but is quite handy while typing and does not give the feeling of being overcrowded. The backlight LED is really bright and a pleasant sight, though very shiny and prone to fingerprints. At the right hand side of the power button is a bezel; it is used to switch on the touch screen. Towards the bottom, at the right side is a flexible stylus.

The software that is incorporated with the T91 is very coolly designed and functions the way it is promoted. One has use the touch screen slowly or you will experience problems in recognition. Largely, the Asus Eee PC T91 Tablet Netbook is a fun product to use and comes cheap at a price $499 only (£350 GBP). It is definitely worth a look.

ASUSTeK which became popular with its low cost Eee PC range of personal computers has come out with a higher performing model in the X51 range of PCs. They are robust and have attractive look.

With overall dimensions of 14.4 x 10.4 x 1.4 in and a weight of 6.2 lbs, the Asus X51 small laptop is compact and portable. The 15.4″ BrightView WXGA display with a pixel resolution of 1280 x 800 is bright with good contrast.

The small laptop is powered by Intel T2310 Pentium Dual Core Processor with 1.46GHz CPU speed, 533MHz FSB, and 1MB Cache. Other models in this range powered by either Intel Celeron M or Intel Dual Core T2080 processor are available. Expandability depending on one’s needs is possible with the X51 range of PCs. The hard disk is a 160 GB 5400 rpm Hitachi make. The laptop has generous 4 USB ports as well as a Wifi card, 56 Kbps modem and a 10/100 LAN that take care of external connectivity.

The Asus Eee PC range are ultra portable notebooks with low price developed jointly by Intel and ASUSTeK and originally meant for educational purposes but now available for the consumer market. Their appeal lies in a blend of low cost, high portability, relatively good performance, and ease of use. There are 4 models to choose from in the range.

With overall dimensions of just 8.9 x 6.7 x 1.4 in and a weight of just 2 lbs, the Asus Eee PC 701 can practically fit in any carrying case. The display measures 7″ diagonally and has a resolution of only 800 x 480 which is low for gaming, large spreadsheets etc. But the display is bright and clear with good colour reproduction. The keyboard as well as the touchpad is tiny in keeping with the overall size and it would require some practice for fast typing.

The Eee has good build that can withstand knocks and bumps to some extent. It is also comparatively shockproof with no moving parts and the keyboard base is firm and screen mounting is solid.

The notebook is run by Intel Celeron M 800 MHz chip which is adequate for traditional office applications but not for large editing of videos and images. The hard disk is a 4 GB flash which may be found insufficient as the OS and other bundled applications themselves consumes nearly half the space. But additional flash memory space can be created through USB port.

The Asus Eee PC 701 has good external connectivity with a 802.11bg wireless card, a traditional Ethernet card and 3 USB 2.0 ports. Additional external storage via optical DVD writer can be hooked on to the notebook. The machine also has a tiny webcam in the bezel.

The Operating system is a customized version of Linux Xandros, and the interface is easy to use with Internet, Work, Play, Settings and Favourite icons lined up on top of the screen. The Minimize, Maximize and Close buttons on top of each window have a Windows like appearance which makes the transition easy. OpenOffice 2 for handling documents and Firefox 2 for emails and browsing the internet are pre installed on the laptop. Overall the machine has easy to use interface for the novice as well as the expert. The present configuration has a potential problem of lack of printer support.

The laptop is powered by 4 Li-Ion cells battery which is good for about 3 hours of normal use. It also carries a one year RTB warranty.

To summarize the Asus Eee PC 701 is an excellent machine for sending out emails and working on documents and spreadsheets on the go being ultra lightweight and ultra small. The price is also very affordable which makes it a good value buy for every day use.
