Dell Streak Smartphone

The new Dell Streak tablet offers many of the features that iPad offers and more. It has 5 in WVGA touch screen TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. There are 5 MP and VGA dual cameras (front and back) with LED flash. With outer dimensions of 6 x 3.1 x 0.4 in, the smartphone is very slim and weighs just 0.5 lbs.

Dell Streak tablet has built in 3 GB memory (ROM + RAM) and an extendable 16 GB micro SD card available for the user. The processor is 1 GHZ Snap Dragon 8250 processor and OS is Android 1.6. The smartphone has 1530 mAH battery that can last up to 24 hours under normal usage. It has excellent video playback facility. There is QWERTY keyboard along with number pad and a double width button for entering emoticons.

It supports SMS, MMS, Email, IM messaging; MP3, WMA, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR, Midi, WAV sound file formats; and H.263 / H.264, .3GP, MPEG4, WMV video formats. For external connectivity Dell Streak tablet has WLAN 802.11b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, and a USB 2.0 port. Other features of the tablet include ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, accelerometer, e-compass, GPS, and capacitive sensor keys.

The smartphone is available free of cost with a 24 month £35/month contract with O2 and £399 without contract. To sum up, Dell Streak tablet is one of the best Android mobile devices released so far but the OS is not the latest version 2.2.

HTC Desire has been said to be much quicker, large in size and comes equipped with a full Android punch than the HTC Legend and has won the Global Mobile Award 2010.  T-Mobile is the first mobile company that is offering the HTC Desire to the UK community.  The HTC Desire has been dubbed as the phone with a large 3.7 inch OLED touch screen with a resolution of 480 X 800 WVGA.  But even with the large screen size, the HTC Desire still takes a modest size shape to its phone which enhances the uniqueness of the HTC Desire.  However, the phone is equipped with a brown case instead of an aluminium chassis which is quite low-key for a sophisticated phone.  The key buttons located on the top of the HTC Desire is set in a washed out- tone and backed with aluminium setting to further give the phone an irreplaceable look.

More on the features of the HTC Desire include a 5 Megapixel Camera with auto focus, geotagging and face detection capability.  The HTC Desire is embedded with G-Sensor, Digital Compass as well as Ambient light sensor.  Being a HTC model, the HTC Desire does not fall short with its widgets such as bookmarks, calendar, photo album, messages twitter and so much more.  HTC Desire does allow a person to keep up with their social life by incorporating the social networking integration such as Facebook, video sharing on YouTube and photo sharing on selected social networks.  The HTC Desire has 3G, GPRS, EDGE and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and multimedia capabilities.  With a phone that seems to fit the younger and older generation and businessmen of all ages, it is a wise choice for many to have a phone on the go that is classy and sophisticated and big with its features.

Nokia booklet 3G netbook

Nokia, the Finnish mobile phone leader has entered the growing netbook market with the release of Nokia booklet 3G netbook. Made of aircraft grade aluminium chassis, the lightweight netbook is sleek and sturdy.

With dimensions of 10.4 x 7.3 x 0.78 inches, the netbook weighs just 2.75 lbs. The low power consuming Intel Atom Z530, 1.6 GHz processor powers the netbook having 1 GB, DDR2, 533 MHz RAM. The hard disk is 120 GB, 1.8”/5mmH/SATA, 8 MB cache, 4200 RPM drive. The 10.1” 1280 x 720 pixels display is LED backlit and the images are clear and crisp.

Nokia booklet 3G netbook

For external connectivity, the thin netbook has Wi-fi: 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and Built-in 3G modem (for data calls only). Other features of this small netbook are 1.3 mega pixel FF camera, Built-in stereo speakers, and microphone, Analogue audio output / headphone out (with OMTP headsets also functioning as audio-in), accelerometer (motion sensor) with HDMI out, 3 x USB 2.0 ports, 1 x DC-in, 1 x SD card reader, and 1 x SIM / USIM slot. The 16 cell, 56.8 Wh, Li-Ion prismatic battery lasts up to 12 hours under normal usage which is relatively long. Windows 7 Starter edition is the OS for this netbook.

To summarize, Nokia booklet 3G netbook has great looks, long battery life but the processor is somewhat slow.

Google Nexus Mobile phone

Google has begun the New Year 2010 with a bang with the release of the much anticipated Google Nexus Mobile Phone last week in US. Designed by Taiwan’s HTC and running on Google’s very own Android OS version 2.1, this smartphone has a 3.7” OLED 480 x 800 pixels display. OLED displays are more bright and colour rich compared to TFT LCD screen. It has 512 MB RAM on board and a 1 GHz Qualcomm 8250 Snapdragon processor which makes it faster than either Apple’s iPhone or Motorola’s Droid (aka Milestone).

The dimensions of this smartphone are 4.6” x 2.3” x 0.4” and weighs 0.3 lbs (130 gm) with battery. The 5 Mega pixel camera has auto focus, LED flash and 2x digital zoom and video recording maximum 30fps quality. There is 4 GB storage available which is expandable to 32 GB through SD card. Other features include 1400mAH battery, music player, FM radio and sound recorder. It has MicroUSB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP connectivity options.

What is interesting is that Google has chosen direct sales through its web store rather than the traditional channel sales partners for selling Nexus. How well it goes with the customers remains to be seen. Customer support is an important issue and how Google handles it is a million dollar question. Google has tied with T-mobile in US for mobile services with rumours of AT&T likely to join the bandwagon soon. The Nexus smartphone is priced at $530 (£308) unlocked i.e. free of any contract and $180 (£111) with a 2 year contract with T-Mobile. It will be available in UK soon.

Palm Pre mobile phone

Palm Pre is the latest mobile phone from Palm, Inc. packed with a no. of features. What makes the mobile phone unique are the apps that are loaded on to it: right from entertainment, social networking, news to navigation, 16 of them in all. It is a mobile phone and a netbook rolled into one! In fact the thin line between a mobile phone and a netbook is blurring with the introduction of devices like Pal Pre which is a fine example of the convergence of computing and communication technology.

With webOS as the operating system platform, Palm Pre has 8GB RAM memory and a pleasing 3.1in multi touch HVGA display screen with 320 x 480 pixels resolution. The 3MP camera has automatic LED flash and the QWERTY keyboard can be slided out for easy texting. The wireless connectivity is handled by Wi-Fi 802 11b/g with WPA, WPA2, WEP, 802.1X authentication and also by Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR with A2DP stereo Bluetooth support. The mobile phone handles different audio and video formats including MP3, AAC, AMR, WAV, QCELP, MPEG-4, H 263, H 264 as well as GIF, JPEG, PNG and BMP image formats.

The Palm Pre uses the Palm Synergy feature to bring Microsoft Office Outlook, Google, Yahoo and Facebook calendars together in one logical view. Its emailing feature includes Microsoft Exchange, POP3/IMAP (Yahoo Mail, Gmail, AOL, and Hotmail) and integrated instant messaging, SMS and MMS

The Palm Pre is available on the O2 network in the UK free of cost for a 24 month contract and a £34.26 tariff. It is a must have for mobile phone buffs who want something different from an iphone or a Blackberry.

The Motorola Milestone is the latest mobile phone from Motorola and the first to run on Android 2.0 OS, the Google’s operating system for mobile devices. It has been released for sale in U.K. just this week and is already receiving rave reviews. It directly competes with Apple’s iPhone in many respects.

Called Droid in U.S. and Milestone in U.K., the device has been designed to bring desktop computing experience for mobile phone users. One can perform tasks like web browsing, emailing, instant messaging etc. using Motorola Milestone. It has already sold 800,000 handsets in U.S. since its release in November.

One of the important features of Motorola Milestone which an iPhone does not possess is the ability to multitask – just like a PC; you can run several applications in the background like listening to music, receiving IM alerts, write an email, etc all simultaneously in a single place. Like other Android devices, users can download games, apps and other software from the Android Marketplace.

Another interesting feature of Android version 2.0 software is the ability for satellite navigation. One can receive traffic alerts, detailed directions, images of routes etc. all on the mobile phone! Motonav, the mapping software similar to TomTom and Garmin is available for a 60 day free trial with Motorola Milestone.

All in all Android 2.0 seems to be the best thing that has happened to the mobile phone marketplace in a long time and Motorola Milestone exploits it fully to give its users a completely new experience. No wonder more manufacturers like Lenova are planning to bring out new devices based on Android soon.
