Phillips, the consumer electronics giant has recently forayed into the field of laptop computers. Though it is well known in the TV and audio market, it has introduced an attractive option in the ultra portable laptop market with the 12NB5800 model at an affordable price.

The Phillips 12NB5800 lightweight laptop is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor with 2GB RAM enough to run Windows Vista OS. With external dimensions of 11.8×8.8×1.7″ and a weight of 4.3 lb, the laptop is compact and highly portable. The display measures 12.1in screen diagonally and has a resolution of 1,280×800 pixels. The contrast and colour resolution is good but the screen is a bit glossy and is quite reflective.

The graphics is handled by Intel GMA X3100 processor, with 358MB memory. While the graphics processor capacity is sufficient for normal usage, it is not so for gaming. Professional gamers would find the laptop slow. The 120GB hard disk capacity is on the lower side when compared to its peers but is compensated by the internal DVD RW optical drive for backup storage.

Another drawback of the ultra portable laptop is the availability of only 2.0 USB ports. But the external connectivity is good otherwise with Wifi connection, Bluetooth and Ethernet card. There is also an integrated webcam that will be useful for web conferencing. The battery of 12NB 5800 lasts for about 2 hours under normal usage which is quite low especially when one is on the move.
