The 250GB hard drive provides plenty of storage space but due to its sleek styling there is no built in CD/DVD drive. External connectivity is not skimped on though and you get Wi-fi, Bluetooth support, 3 USB 2.0 ports and SD and memory stick slots. A VGA port allows external TV connection up to maximum resolution of 1400 x 1050. It also boasts built-in stereo speakers and a handy 0.3 MP webcam.

After the launch of a super expensive notebook, the ‘Lifestyle PC’ earlier this year, Sony recently launched an amazing new netbook in the Sony Vaio W series. It is one of the early birds to take the utmost advantage of the newly relaxed rules by Intel concerning their netbooks.

A 10 inch display and a remarkable resolution of 1,366 x 768 is significantly larger than most standard netbooks available today. The LED is similar to other netbooks, but the resolution is a huge improvement and the rest of the manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, and Samsung will surely follow suit as soon as they possibly can. The pictures on the screen are razor sharp, though the W-series follows the trend of reflective glossy displays.

Available in three astonishing colors, the very stylish Sony Vaio W series has all the usual netbook features such as a Wi Fi, blue tooth, 160 GB HDD and 1 GB RAM. It also comes loaded with an Intel Atom N280 processor, built in motion eye camera and microphone, SD memory card slot, Windows XP home, 2 USB 2.0 ports, Intel HD audio, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator, Memory Stick PRO Duo with MagicGate functionality and Electro-static touch pad.

On the negative end, though, is the two hour battery pack which is ridiculously low as compared to the 8 hour battery pack available in the market today, especially when the product is priced at $ 499.99.

The product will be available in the market next month, but you can place your order now online at the Sony style website.

Sony has been known for its innovative products and the Vaio VGN-SZ4XWN/C ultra portable laptop is no exception. It combines performance with portability. With a 13.3″ display, thickness of 0.9″ and weight of just 3.7 lbs, the laptop is lightweight, slim and highly portable.

The Sony Vaio VGN-SZ4XWN/C subnotebook is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor with 2.0 GHz CPU speed. With main memory of 2GB of DDR SDRAM 533MHz, most applications run smoothly on this laptop. The hard disk is 120 GB – Serial ATA-150 – 5400rpm and can store thousands of video and audio files. Further for backup storage, this lightweight laptop is provided with internal DVD/RW/R DL/RAM optical drive with DVD burning capability.

The external dimensions of this ultra portable laptop are 12.4″x 9.2″x 0.9″ and the display screen measures 13.3″ diagonally. The widescreen display uses XBRITETM LCD with LED technology and has a resolution of 1280×800 pixels. The screen is bright with good colour contrast. The technology also ensures low power consumption.

The graphics is handled by NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 GPU processor and the performance would be liked by gaming enthusiasts. An added feature of this laptop is its switchable graphics capability i.e. NVIDIA can be used when performance matters and the integrated Intel graphics for others, saving on battery life.

The lightweight laptop has good external connectivity with options like 56 Kbps Modem for fax / internet, Gigabit Ethernet for LAN, Wireless Network Connection (802.11a/g), Bluetooth for wifi internet and peripheral connections. Some of the other features include electro-static touch pad as the pointing device, built-in 0.37M camera, microphone and stereo speakers, biometric fingerprint sensor for password free access, slot for memory stick, and 2 USB ports (2.0 compliant). Just 2 USB ports may be felt a handicap by some users while the camera resolution of just 640×480 pixels may also be a put off.

The keyboard has full-size keys which is very convenient to use. The fingerprint reader is also a very handy for logins without passwords. The long lasting Li-ion battery is one of the plus points of the Sony Vaio VGN-SZ4XWN/C laptop. It lasts up to 3 hours under normal usage which can be extended with optional large capacity battery. Sony’s provides standard 1 year warranty to the laptop which is extendable up to 4 years with additional cost.

The operating system is Windows Vista Business Edition, and additional software provided include Click to DVD® – DVD Creation, SmartWiTM Technology, LocationFree® Player etc. developed by Sony and Norton 360 All-In-One Security Version 2.0.

All in all Sony Vaio VGN-SZ4XWN/C lightweight laptop is high in performance, has attractive design with price being a limiting factor.

The latest Vaio TZ series are a replacement to older Vaio TX series with ultra thin 11.1″ LCD displays. The special features of the newer version are the slimness, low weight, long lasting battery, smart look and additional features are wireless WAN, solid state hard drive, DVD burner, USB port, and built in camera.

Though the laptop is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo 1.2 GHz processor, its performance is somewhat slow possibly because of the bloated software loaded into the machine. The solid state 32 GB hard drive with no moving parts makes it more reliable and lightweight. The laptop weighs only 2.7 lbs, has dimensions of 10.9″(W) 0.8″ – 1.17″(H) 7.8″(D) with around 1″ average thickness, making it ultra portable.

The display features 11.1″ WXGA with Sony’s XBRITE-HiColour LCD technology with white LED backlight and anti reflection coating. It provides high brightness levels and 72% colour saturation for sharp pictures and a screen resolution up to 1366×768 pixels. The carbon fibre casing provides protection against shocks while at the same is lightweight.

The long lasting Li-ion battery is one of the highlights of the Sony Vaio TZ series laptops. It lasts from 4 to 7.5 hours depending on the application in the standard configuration which can be extended to 11.5 hours with optional large capacity battery. The optical storage is taken care of by a DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/DVD-RAM Drive that can burn DVDs. The keyboard has equally spaced flat keys, with a row of small media control buttons on the front edge, and a glowing power button in green colour is fixed to the laptop’s circular hinge. The power consumed by the laptop is 68W+10%, depending on usage.

The laptop has wireless WAN feature for connecting to broadband internet, Bluetooth for connecting to peripherals as well as Ethernet card for traditional Local Area Network. Additionally it also has integrated V.92/V.90 modem (RJ-11) connection. Some of the other features are electro-static touch pad as the pointing device, built-in 1.3M camera, microphone and stereo speakers, biometric fingerprint sensor for password free access, slot for memory stick, and 2 USB ports (2.0 compliant). Sony’s provides standard 1 year warranty to the laptop which is extendable up to 4 years with additional cost.

The operating system is Windows Vista Business Edition, and additional software provided include Click to DVD® – DVD Creation, SmartWiTM Technology, LocationFree® Player etc. developed by Sony. Though the performance is on the slower side, for operations like surfing the Web, creating office documents or performing basic multimedia operations, the speed is satisfactory. For professional users like those doing video editing or working with huge Photoshop files this ultra portable laptop may not be the correct choice.

To summarize, Sony Vaio TZ series laptop is packed with features, has attractive design and look but its cost and slow performance are the only blips in an otherwise fine laptop.

Expert Review:

The Sony Vaio UX180P is a full featured Micro PC aimed at the growing ultra mobile PC (UMPC) market. It is highly portable and has most of the features for day to day computing needs.

The stylish UX180P has a 4.5″ display with sharp pictures. There are buttons on the right and left side of the screen for mouse operation, power and wireless on/off switch. On the top are the tiny speaker, biometric scanner and front camera while the bottom has status indicators for the battery, Bluetooth, WLAN, WWAN, num lock, hard drive, caps lock and scroll lock. The 64-key QWERTY backlit keyboard reveals itself when the screen is slid up.

The UX180P is powered by Intel Core Solo Processor U1400 (1.2 GHz) with 2MB L2 cache. The memory is 512MB PC2-3200 400MHz DDR2 SDRAM, which is sufficient for running Office applications and web browsing but not for Photoshop and other memory intensive applications. The display has non standard 1024×600 resolution but the quality is excellent. The hard disk is a 30GB 4200 RPM unit with shock protection. But it cannot be upgraded which is a negative point.

There are 4 ways of inputting into the Sony Vaio UX180P. Apart from the keyboard, there are mouse buttons on the right side of the display panel. There is also a pressure sensitive analogue pointing stick that controls the mouse movement. The fourth method of giving inputs is through the touch screen panel using a stylus.

Docking to increase the functionality is another feature that the micro PC is provided with. The fully functional docking station connects to power, VGA, 3 USB ports, Ethernet, IEEE 1394 port and AV out ports. The small size of the docking station makes it highly portable.

The three types of external connectivity make the UX180P highly mobile. While the wireless LAN is powered by Intel’s 3945 card, the micro PC also has Toshiba Bluetooth stack and WWAN to connect to the Cingular data network. The integrated biometric scanner provides additional layer security at the BIOS as well as Windows levels.

As far as the audio is concerned the UX180P has an integrated microphone, jacks for headphone and mic in and a mono speaker. There are 2 built in cameras, the 0.3 Mp camera in front is meant for video chats while the 1.3 Mp camera at the back can take sharp pictures.

The Sony Vaio UX180P is run by Windows XP (SP 2) operating system and there is a host of software tools preloaded into the machine. These include camera management software, security software, power profiles, software for backup and many Sony developed software tools. The battery lasts for about 2.5 hours under normal usage and Sony gives standard 1 year warranty with telephonic support extendable to 3 years at additional cost.

To conclude, the Sony UX180P micro PC is a marvel, with a host of features for every day use but the short battery life, price and non upgradeability may be a put off.
