In November 2010, approximately 20 months after first purchasing it, the 160GB hard drive crashed on my Dell Inspiron 1318. From one day to the next it had a string of strange failures that would not allow me to properly boot up. After using the restoration software on the backup partition of this same hard drive, I will mention numerous times, I finally was able to identify the fault. The recorded codes were all at the root of a hard drive failure (blue screens of death). I immediately shut down the laptop to avoid damaging the remaining usable partition (D, where the restoration software was stored by Dell). I removed and replaced the 160GB hard drive with a same manufacturer and similar spec 500GB hard drive. I used the Dell provided backup CD-ROM to reload the Windows Operating System from the restoration partition of the old 160GB hard drive. I had to purchase an inexpensive hard drive enclosure from Amazon.com and used that to extract the backup software from the old 160GB hard drive to the newly installed 500GB hard drive. Since then, I have had no other problems in the last 14 months, now January 2012. Aside from this storage issue, which can happen to any laptop, desktop or server, the Dell Inspiron 1318 runs like a champ. I don't see myself replacing this laptop any time soon.

I ordered the Dell Inspiron 1318 in March 2009 with the upgraded 2 GHz processor and a beefed up 4 GB memory. The hard drive is the same at 160 GB. I opted out of the integrated webcam feature, perhaps I should've kept it in. Otherwise this laptop is quite nice, a bit noisy as Scott mentioned below, but it's just the hard drive when accessing data that has not yet been loaded into the RAM, at least the fan is hardly audible. I am very happy with it.

“Very portable, and amazing, very much worth the price, but the hard drive is a little noisy”
