Expert Review:
With the release of XPS M1330 laptop,

Dell has tried to move away from its mass market image to one with emphasis on design and look. It is one of the thinnest laptops in its range with the thickness varying from 0.87 inches in the front to 1.3 inches in the rear. With overall dimensions of 12.5 x 9.4 x 1.3 in and weighing about 4 lbs, it is also light in weight and highly portable. It is available in 3 attractive colours: blue, red or black top with the keyboard tray brushed silver and black accents.
The Dell XPS M1330 is loaded with powerful features. It is fitted with Intel Core 2 Duo processor with CPU speed varying from 1.5 GHz to 2.2 GHz and cache from 2 MB to 4 MB, depending on configuration. It has novel features like direct access to Office applications with Dell’s MediaDirect without booting Windows. Its optional biometric reader makes remembering passwords redundant. It has fast memory with 1.4 GB to 4GB shared dual channel 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

The UltraSharp widescreen 1280 x 800 display with 13.3 in TFT active matrix and 2.0 MP camera provides sharp images. Optionally LED – backlit 13.3″ UltraSharpTM WXGA display with 0.3 MP camera is also available. The latter has a brighter and thinner display screen. The graphics accelerator has Intel Integrated Graphics X3100 as standard and the more powerful NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS with 128 MB dedicated DDR3 graphics memory for the discerning users. The HDMI output can be connected to high definition plasma or LCD TV and with the remote, it provides for a more comfortable viewing.
The OS is any one of the flavours of Windows Vista viz. Ultimate, Home Premium or Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED which is packed with multimedia features for handling photos, video or music with ease. The hard disk is available in 3 configurations viz. up to 200GB with 7200 RPM SATA hard drive, up to 160GB with 5400 RPM SATA hard drive and up to 64GB with a Solid State hard drive. That is a great choice that would satisfy most needs.
For backup, the M1330 has optical storage with integrated slot-load CD/DVD+/-RW Drive. The I/O Ports include 2 USB 2.0 compliant 4-pin connectors, RJ45 Ethernet port (10/100), Video: VGA & HDMI, ExpressCard 54 mm slot, 8-in-1 removable memory card reader and audio jacks for stereo in & headphone/speaker out (x2) dual digital array mics. Just 2 USB ports may not be sufficient for some users. The 6 cell Lithium Ion battery lasts up to two and a half hours while the 9 cell can last at least 50% longer but less than an equivalent Apple’s MacBook.

Other than the above features, M1330 has wireless options – hyperband multi-antenna for find nearby Wi-Fi hotspot in seconds without powering up the laptop and optional Bluetooth for connecting peripherals without cables. Some of the ergonomic features of M1330 include touch-sensitive controls for volume and media playback, eject button for the slot-loading DVD drive, and small remote control that pops into the PC card slot on the side. One of the limitations is the small 2.75 inch touchpad that is a little hard to use because of the size.
In summary, for a price starting from £449, the Dell M1330 has a host of features and good looks and is comparable in price / performance with other competing models.

“Average; Good performance, has everything like most laptops; for the cost, build should have been better, not really light weight, smaller screen would have helped”

“Very fast and quiet, nice and light system; has handy remote, good quality recording TV 9 cell battery provided with 5.5 hours of usage. Good but not great webcam, good biometric reader and microphone array. Only 2 USB ports, carrying case has limited capacity, keyboard little hard and limited no. of color choice.”

I love it. It’s lightweight, gorgeous, powerful. and to be honest, a major turnaround for dell, who have produced ugly rubbish for too long.. so well done dell
