The Samsung N510 cheap laptop is the first one to incorporate NVIDIA Ion LE graphics processor in a laptop. It has certainly improved gaming capabilities of the machine. It is also light in weight (just 3.2 lbs) and compact (size: 11.4 x 7.87 x 1.18 inches) which makes it highly portable.

Powered by Intel Atom N280 / 1.66 GHz, 512 KB, 667 MHz processor, the small laptop is measly on power consumption. The main memory has a capacity of 1 GB and the hard disk, 160 GB. The 11.6″ TFT, 1366 x 768 pixels (WXGA), LED-backlit, SuperBright Non-Gloss screen displays colours vividly.

Nokia booklet 3G netbook

Nokia, the Finnish mobile phone leader has entered the growing netbook market with the release of Nokia booklet 3G netbook. Made of aircraft grade aluminium chassis, the lightweight netbook is sleek and sturdy.

With dimensions of 10.4 x 7.3 x 0.78 inches, the netbook weighs just 2.75 lbs. The low power consuming Intel Atom Z530, 1.6 GHz processor powers the netbook having 1 GB, DDR2, 533 MHz RAM. The hard disk is 120 GB, 1.8”/5mmH/SATA, 8 MB cache, 4200 RPM drive. The 10.1” 1280 x 720 pixels display is LED backlit and the images are clear and crisp.

Nokia booklet 3G netbook

For external connectivity, the thin netbook has Wi-fi: 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and Built-in 3G modem (for data calls only). Other features of this small netbook are 1.3 mega pixel FF camera, Built-in stereo speakers, and microphone, Analogue audio output / headphone out (with OMTP headsets also functioning as audio-in), accelerometer (motion sensor) with HDMI out, 3 x USB 2.0 ports, 1 x DC-in, 1 x SD card reader, and 1 x SIM / USIM slot. The 16 cell, 56.8 Wh, Li-Ion prismatic battery lasts up to 12 hours under normal usage which is relatively long. Windows 7 Starter edition is the OS for this netbook.

To summarize, Nokia booklet 3G netbook has great looks, long battery life but the processor is somewhat slow.

Apple iPad

Apple released its latest gadget the iPad last month after much speculation and expectation. You might have already bought one, seen a demo, or at least heard about it. While there are many commendable features in iPad that makes iPhone look obsolete it is yet to catch up with cheap netbooks, features wise.

The use of Apple’s very own A4 processor with 1 GHz CPU gives iPad enough power to watch videos without flicker while at the same time it is stingy on power consumption. The iPad is highly portable with its thin, light body and trendy looks. The display screen is brighter than that of an iPhone. There are 2 configurations available with iPad for browsing the web / making calls: only Wi-fi and both Wi-fi and GSM.

But there is no SD card reader or an USB built into iPad. You need a docking device like iPad Camera Connection Kit for hooking on to a digital camera, keyboard, SD card for additional storage or any other USB peripheral device. Using iPhone OS 3.2 in iPad does not allow multi tasking and you can not substitute it for your laptop or traditional PC yet. You need to sync it with Mac or other PC for obtaining content from iTunes Store or App Store or iBook Store. There is also no HDMI output for connecting directly with a TV or a camera in iPad in its current form.

The release of iPad is going to be a turning point in further blurring the thin line between mobile phones and cheap netbooks and many more devices are sure to follow and crowd this newly formed market segment.

Toshiba NB200 Netbook

Toshiba, one of the leaders in laptops, has released a cheap version in NB200 netbook. This attractive looking netbook is thin (1.3 in maximum thickness) and lightweight (just 2.9 lbs). 

The small Toshiba NB200 netbook is powered by Intel Atom N280 (1.66 GHz, 512 MB, 667 MHz FSB) processor and has a main memory of 1 GB RAM and hard disk capacity of 250 GB. The 10.1” screen has WSVGA TDT display with LED backlight and a pixel resolution of 1024 x 600.

Toshiba NB200 Netbook

For external connectivity, the cheap netbook has Wi-Fi connection, Fast Ethernet LAN, and 3 USB 2.0 ports. One of the USB ports is a powered port i.e. it works even when the netbook is powered off which allows easy charging of devices. Other features of this lightweight netbook include built-in stereo speakers, webcam, microphone, and 2 in 1 media slot. The Li-Ion battery lasts up to 9 hours under normal usage. The operating system is Windows 7 starter edition. Toshiba provides standard international warranty. 

With NB200, Toshiba has introduced an affordable and attractive netbook that can compete with the best in the market.

Acer Aspire One netbooks

Acer, the Taiwanese computer maker increased its worldwide sales in 2009 by 29% to displace Dell as the second largest PC maker in the world. According to Gartner’s estimates, Acer had a worldwide market share of 13.5% behind HP’s 19.8% even though the growth rate of Acer in 2009 was much faster (29%) than HP (11%) in worldwide PC shipments. Dell the 3^rd largest PC maker had a negative growth of 9% in 2009. According to Gartner Acer established itself as the leader of the sub-$500 consumer mobile PC segment in key regions and its improved branding strategies also helped it to work better with channel partners. 

In light of the above developments, it was not surprising when Acer’s founder Stan Shih made the following comments in Taipei based Commercial Times recently: “The trend for low-priced computers will last for the coming years.  But US computer makers just don’t know how to put such products on the market… US computer brands may disappear over the next 20 years just like what happened to US television brands.” 

As per Digitimes estimates Acer is projected to surpass HP in 2011 to become the world’s top computer maker.  The progress has been driven by aggressively priced and state of the art PCs, especially netbooks. However there could be one stumbling block in Stan Shih’s prediction coming true which is Apple, Inc. Apple has been slowly and steadily increasing its market share even though it traditionally prices its products well above HP or Dell leave alone Acer. Hence it remains to be seen what happens to HP or Dell or Apple in the next 20 years and their demise largely remains in the realm of conjecture for now.
