Expert Review:

The HP TX 2050 laptop known as TX 2000 outside Europe is an upgraded version of the earlier TX 1000 model. It has a rotating screen, an active stylus pen and an upgraded processor. The laptop is powered by AMD Turion 64X2 Processor TL60 with 2.1 GHz CPU speed. It is a 64 bit, dual core processor. It has 2GB, 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, as memory like many other comparable laptops. With dimensions of 12 x 8.8 x 1.5 in and 4.4 lbs weight, the system is lightweight and portable. The hard disk has a capacity of 160 GB – Serial ATA-150 – 5400 rpm and Hitachi make. The optical storage is through DVD±RW (+R DL) / DVD-RAM that permits burning of DVDs.
The display is 12.1 in TFT active matrix, 1280 x 800 (WXGA) resolution widescreen, high gloss / anti glare touch screen. The graphics is handled by a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 Graphics processor suitable for fast gaming. The screen is fixed on a centre hinge and hence can be rotated and also folded over the keyboard. Thus it can be operated like a tablet PC. Other than keyboard, the laptop has touch screen, touch pad and active stylus pen for giving input to the system. The stylus pen has one end for writing and the other end for erasing. The touch pad is located just below the key board and has a mute button that prevents accidental activation of the pad while using the keyboard.

The built in devices in the laptop are stereo speakers, Bluetooth antenna, wireless LAN antenna, and web camera. The wireless LAN has great range and high speed with the latest N wireless standard. The Bluetooth allows connecting for easy wireless connection with peripherals. The laptop has a row of media control buttons on the side of the lid that makes them convenient to use in tablet mode. The credit card size remote located on a slot in the left side of the system allows convenient operation when connecting the laptop to an external large size monitor. 5 in1 media card slot is useful in directly loading the pictures taken in a digital camcorder into the laptop. The finger print reader permits secure logins without entering password.
The OS used is Windows Vista Home Premium Edition and Norton Int Security software is also provided. The HP TX 2050 laptop is fitted with 6 cell Li-Ion battery which lasts for about 2 hours and consumes 29 watts during normal usage and 1.3 watts when powered down. HP provides standard 1 year warranty extendable to 3 years at additional cost on the laptop.
All in all HP TX 2050 has novel features and has maintained the HP tradition of style, utility and looks. It scores a plus with capability of being used like a laptop as well as a tablet PC and is worth giving consideration when looking for ultra light laptops.

“It is a brilliant piece of machinery. It is rare to find something so great for work as well as relaxation; a tablet pc with decent configuration and a fair price.”

“Great find; longer battery life than the TX 1000, cooler design”

I have had mine for a week now, and I love it. I was surprised to find an additional battery in the box, a high capacity 73Wh as well as the standard slimline battery. The bigger battery is a little chunky, but it tilts the keyboard towards the user and the extended battery life is always useful.
In tablet mode the notebook is great, with pen or finger. Ideal for browsing the ‘net whilst watching TV!
Mine was supplied with a 250 GB HD, and coupled with the 5-in-1 media card slot, this makes it an ideal companion for my photographic trips.
