This ultra portable Packard Bell BG46 laptop made by Packard Bell BV is lightweight and is packed with power and performance. It is driven by an Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo T5450 Processor (1.6GHz, 533MHz FSB, 2MB Cache) and Windows Vista Home premium Edition operating system. It is reasonably priced at £599 and is on the lower end of comparative models in terms of features. The display is a 12.1 inch Brightview, Transflective TFT widescreen, with a pixel resolution of 1280 x 800. The graphics is handled by Intel GMA X3100 processor. The video RAM has 358 MB size which is more than normal for displaying high quality images. The memory is 2048MB size DDR2 SDRAM and the hard disk has a capacity of 160 GB, which is enough storage space for all music and photos and also smooth running of applications.
With dimensions of 11.6″(W) 1.25″(H) 8.3″(D) and a weight of 3.5lbs, the Packard Bell BG46 laptop is highly portable. Regarding external connectivity, the BG46 has wireless Wifi connection and the traditional 10/100 Ethernet LAN. It also has 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting external devices like digital camcorder, etc. But it lacks other wireless connections like Bluetooth and Infra red for linking with peripherals. The laptop has built in speakers, microphone and headphone jacks and a 4 in 1 Multimedia card reader. Some of the flash memory formats supported by the card reader are SD Memory Card, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, MultiMediaCard. There is also a 1.3Mp webcam for taking reasonably sharp pictures. Additional storage is through external slim ODD optical drive DVDRW (+R double layer) via CDs / DVDs. The keyboard is the standard 90 keys QWERTY keyboard with Synaptics touchpad.
The Packard Bell BG46 laptop lacks some of the standard features provided in comparative models of other manufacturers like Modem, Bluetooth, Infra red, remote, Firewire connection for quick download of videos from camcorders etc, but that is the price one has to pay for the relatively low cost of the laptop.
Some of the software packages other than Windows Vista Home Premium operating system provided with the system are Google Picasa for managing photos, Roxio Creator 9 for burning CD / DVDs, Cyberlink Power Cinema for playing DVDs, Internet Explorer / Mozilla Firefox for web browsing, Packard Bell Data Secure, Microsoft Works 9 SE home office suite, Packard Bell Info Centre, Norton 360 security software (with 3 months subscription) etc. The list is indicative. The actual packages vary with dealer. 4 cells Li-Ion battery is used for powering the laptop and the system is provided with standard 1-year warranty by the manufacturer.
Overall, the Packard Bell BG46 is a reasonably priced ultra portable laptop packed with powerful features and performance and can be considered value for money.
