Expert Review:
Panasonic is not a well known brand in the laptop market, though they specialize in making ruggedized machines. The Panasonic Toughbook CF-W7 Ultra Portable Laptop, as the name suggests has tough build with drop resistance up to 2 feet, shock absorbing capacity up to 200 pounds and has water resistant keyboard. It is an ideal laptop for outdoor use.
The lightweight laptop is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo Processor L7500 (1.06GHz, 533 MHz FSB, 2 MB Cache) with 1 GB MB DDR2 533 main memory and 80 GB 5400 rpm hard drive. With outer dimensions of 12.2″(W) 2.2″(H) 9.6″(D) and weight of only 3.1lbs, the Panasonic Toughbook CF-W7 is somewhat bulky though it is light in weight.
The 12.1 inches wide screen TFT active matrix LCD display of this ultraportable laptop has a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. This is somewhat low though the display is clear and bright. The graphics is handled by Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 which is an integrated onboard chip that is good enough for office, internet, and video editing but not fast enough for modern computer games.
The external connectivity for this ultraportable laptop is well taken care of with 56 Kbps Modem, Ethernet, 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional WWAN and 3 USB 2.0 ports. It also has a built in DVD RW drive for backup storage. The power source is a Lithium ion 5800 mAh battery that lasts up to 7 hours under normal usage. The OS is Windows XP Business Edition and Panasonic provides a three-year parts-and-labor warranty for the laptop but the machine has to be sent to their service centre.
To summarize, Panasonic Toughbook CF-W7 Ultraportable Laptop is an ideal companion for business travel and outdoor use but the cost and slow game performance are dampeners.
