I bought Equium U400-124 and the touchpad is not working. I have been using a mouse since then. How can I make the touchpad work?

I’m thinking of buying a Toshiba Equium U400-124 but can anyone advise on two issues? First, how come no website, not even Toshiba’s own, mentions how long the battery lasts for after charging? And second, as I’ll be mainly using Word documents and internet, is the RAM which some say is too small likely to be enough for my needs?
